How to Spot Fake or Counterfeit Cards

Getting a rare card is exciting—unless it turns out to be a fake! Unfortunately, counterfeits are out there, but with a few simple tips, you can protect yourself and your collection.

1. Check the Print Quality

  • Real cards have sharp, clear images and text.

  • Fakes often look blurry, have faded colors, or the print may be slightly off-center.

2. Feel the Card

  • Genuine cards have a certain weight and feel—usually sturdy, not flimsy.

  • Counterfeits may feel too thin, too thick, or have a strange texture.

3. Light Test

  • Hold the card up to a bright light. Most real cards have a thin black or blue line (called a “core”) in the middle when viewed from the side.

  • Many fakes don’t have this, or the card will let too much light through.

4. Examine the Edges

  • Authentic cards have clean, even edges.

  • Fakes might show fraying, odd coloring, or uneven cuts.

5. Compare with a Known Real Card

  • Place the card next to a genuine card from the same set.

  • Look for differences in size, color, font, or holographic patterns.

6. Check the Hologram or Foil

  • Many rare cards use unique holograms or foil stamps.

  • Fakes often have poor-quality foils or missing/incorrect holograms.

7. Buy from Trusted Sources

  • Purchase cards from reputable shops (like us!), official vendors, or well-known sellers.

  • Be skeptical of deals that seem “too good to be true.”

Pro Tip:
If you’re unsure, ask an experienced collector or reach out to the community before buying or trading.
